Sleep Number is proud to team up with the Minnesota Vikings and the American Cancer Society for their 4th annual Pamper Her Purple event.
Pamper Her Purple honors local women who are survivors and those still battling cancer. It’s also a celebration of hope and recognition of the resilience and courage honorees possess.
“The last couple of days I have been with fellow survivors and current warriors fighting their battle,” said Sleep Number’s Amy Johnson. “The shared experiences reminded me that I wasn’t alone in this battle, which I often felt, even with my amazing support system.”
Attendees were treated to a well-deserved spa day at Omni Viking Lakes Hotel, followed by an evening reception with a special guest.
Vikings fullback C.J. Ham welcomed guests to the reception and joined them for dinner. Ham shared he feels honored to be there among such strong women. This event is very close to Ham’s heart, as he has his own personal experience with losing a loved one to cancer. His mother, Tina, had a hard-fought battle with pancreatic cancer before succumbing to the disease in May 2020.
According to the American Cancer Society, over 37,000 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in Minnesota in 2024. Although many new cases will be diagnosed this year, there are some hopeful statistics to consider in the fight against this terrible disease:
-
The overall cancer death rate in Minnesota has been declining for almost 30 years.
-
The overall rate of all cancer types combined in Minnesota has decreased on average since 2000.
-
Minnesota's 5-year survival rate for lung cancer is 31%, which is higher than the national rate of 26.6%.
Sleep Number is proud to support the Vikings and the American Cancer Society on Pamper Her Purple and honor these brave women.
“These women are now a part of my cancer story forever; I gained strength from having met them and am grateful for them all. I will keep in touch with many of them, in fact we already have a group chat going!” said Johnson.
Defense Is Your Best Offense
There’s no sure way to prevent cancer, but you can go on the offense with regular screening and lifestyle changes to help reduce your risk. Sleep Number, the American Cancer Society and the NFL are teaming up to help more people find cancer early, because early detection can save lives.
That’s where The Defender comes in. The Defender is a tool from the NFL's Crucial Catch program that helps people learn how to reduce their risk of cancer. The Defender offers personalized tips and includes a quiz and lifestyle assessment to help people determine which screening tests and lifestyle changes are right for them.
According to the American Cancer Society, earlier detection along with advances in treatment has contributed to notable improvements in survival of most cancer types. Nationally:
-
In 2024, a little over 2 million new cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed in the United States.
-
The cancer death rate has declined by 33% since 1991.
-
Overall cancer survival has increased from 49% in the mid-1970s to 69% for diagnoses during 2013-2019.
-
As a result of continuous declines in cancer mortality since 1991, there were an estimated 4.1 million fewer cancer deaths through 2021 than would have been expected if the death rate remained at its peak.
